Case Study – Purifico’s State-of-the-Art Ozone Generation Systems and AquaMetrix ORP Sensors

When it comes to water treatment, ozone is the fastest acting and most powerful technology available for disinfection, odor control, aeration, heavy metal removal, and more. No other oxidizing agent addresses such a wide range of challenges, with proven applications in wastewater, potable water, horticulture, livestock, aquaculture, water reuse, and other sectors.

Ozone is several thousand times more reactive than chlorine, enabling rapid and complete destruction of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes. Its popularity is also driven by its clean chemistry: ozone is generated on-site using only electricity and oxygen from the air, it breaks down quickly, and it leaves only dissolved oxygen behind. Unlike chlorine, ozone does not create harmful disinfection byproducts and eliminates the need to store or handle dangerous chemicals.

Purifico Ozone – Proven Technology and Customer-Centric Design

If you have a case for using ozone, Purifico Ozone has a system designed to fit your needs. With over 25 years of experience, Purifico designs and manufactures robust, user-friendly, and competitively priced systems that stand up to the challenges of industrial water treatment.

Common issues such as gas or water leaks, or unexpected equipment failures, are avoided through refined and proven engineering. Intelligent system controls automatically disengage the unit and alert operators if a problem occurs, protecting both personnel and equipment. With a color touchscreen, intuitive interface, and remote access capabilities, Purifico systems are reliable and simple to operate.

The result is a system that outperforms competitors at a lower cost, backed by a team committed to outstanding customer support and long-term client success.

Clearview Hutterite Colony Case Study – Safe Water for a Thriving Community

The Clearview Hutterite Colony, located near Hussar in Southern Alberta, relies entirely on groundwater to support hundreds of residents, livestock, and crop production. For years, the community struggled with poor water quality, trying various technologies without long-term success.

Since installing a Purifico Ozone system, water quality has dramatically improved. The community’s plumber, Jack, reports, “We’ve never seen our water this clear!” By cleaning and disinfecting their water supply, every aspect of life at Clearview has benefited. Reservoirs now stay clean year-round, providing a reliable source of water for households, livestock, and crop irrigation, giving this hard-working community the resources they need to grow and thrive.

Why ORP Measurement Matters

At the heart of any oxidizing system is accurate measurement and control of oxidant levels. While dissolved ozone sensors might seem like an obvious choice, they come with challenges: they require a dedicated flow cell, frequent calibration, and are sensitive to interference from turbidity and other oxidants – all at a relatively high cost.

Many users are unaware that Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) is a robust, cost-effective, and accurate way to monitor oxidizing strength. As long as ozone is the predominant oxidant in the water, ORP readings correlate directly with dissolved ozone concentration.

To establish this relationship, colorimetric ozone measurements can be taken at different ORP levels and plotted to create a calibration curve. In most disinfection applications, a residual ozone concentration of 0.3–0.4 ppm at a 2-minute contact time is sufficient to inactivate pathogenic microbes. This typically corresponds to an ORP reading between 700–800 mV.

In systems with multiple oxidants—such as greenhouses or swimming pools that may contain free chlorine or peroxide—the ORP reading will reflect the combined effect of all oxidants. In these cases, calibrating ORP against measured dissolved ozone concentrations is essential to maintain safe and effective control. Purifico Ozone systems come standard with software allowing operators to calibrate the systems to the specific water quality they are dealing with.

Why AquaMetrix Stands Out

When selecting ORP probes for their systems, Purifico engineers tested many different sensors. The AquaMetrix differential ORP sensor stood out immediately for its durability, accuracy, and ease of maintenance.

Its differential design provides greater stability and a significantly longer service life compared to conventional ORP probes. A malfunctioning sensor in a disinfection application can have serious consequences. AquaMetrix solves this with replaceable salt bridges and reference solutions, allowing operators to keep the sensor operating at near-100% efficiency over a lifetime of many years.

After extensive testing, Purifico Ozone selected AquaMetrix as their exclusive partner for ORP monitoring.

“The balance between accuracy and durability provided by AquaMetrix can’t be beat,” says Cam Clarke, Founder and Managing Director of Purifico Ozone. “Our systems need equipment that perform reliably for many years. For ORP monitoring, we don’t need to look any further than AquaMetrix.”

Conclusion

By pairing Purifico’s advanced ozone generation systems with AquaMetrix’s high-performance ORP sensors, water treatment operators gain a powerful, reliable, and cost-effective solution. From rural communities to greenhouses and industrial facilities, this partnership ensures clean, safe, and sustainable water—today and for the future.
